Curie’s Class: Nuclear Science for High School Teachers
Heads up to all High School Teachers! Want to gain more knowledge and skills to teach nuclear science in your high school class?
Join us in Curie's Class, a professional development training course/workshop for science teachers in secondary schools!
The course is open to science and technology teachers, with preference to senior high school teachers and those handling special science classes.
Among the topics covered are the basics of atomic structure and radioactivity, effects of radiation, risks and safety of radioactive materials, and nuclear applications in various sectors, among others.
Curie's Class will run from August 23 to September 3, 2021. Sessions will be done virtually with a combination of pre-recorded (asynchronous) and live (synchronous) lectures. Alternative activities and exercises will be conducted in lieu of hands-on experiments.

DOST-PNRI’s irradiation facility serves as benchmark to Tanay dads
Local government officials of Tanay and Barangay Sampaloc of said town recently experienced first-hand how an irradiation facility works, and had all their radiation-related questions answered, in a recent educational visit to the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute’s electron beam (or E-beam) irradiation facility. Admitted in batches that strictly followed current health protocols, the LGU representatives had a walk-through of the irradiation process and learned the functions of all the equipment used.
The DOST-PNRI’s E-beam facility, operated by the Irradiation Services Section (ISS) of the Nuclear Services Division, is used for full-scale research and development and semi-commercial E-beam services. The E-beam facility has a fast irradiation delivery and is currently being used to produce high-value products from natural and synthetic polymers. It is also used in the irradiation of the PNRI-developed plant growth promoter made from seaweeds and can increase yield in rice, mungbean, and peanut from 30-45 percent.

PNRI partners with private sector for commercial irradiation facility
Reaching another milestone in radiation technologies for Filipino industries, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) will provide its expertise to private firm Via Verde in its bid to establish a fully commercial irradiation facility in the Philippines.
PNRI Director Dr. Carlo Arcilla and Via Verde President Dave Ranile signed the memorandum of understanding for PNRI to provide technical assistance in irradiation services on June 16, with no less than DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña as ceremonial witness.
Via Verde’s projected commercial facility will use gamma radiation to process agricultural products and improve their quality and competitiveness in the market, while eventually looking to expand their services to the sterilization of medical equipment, among others.
The company is also looking forward to PNRI’s upgrading of its Cobalt-60 Multipurpose Irradiation Facility (MIF) as it intends to enter into a block-time agreement with PNRI for operating the facility.

Three New Career Scientists from PNRI
The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) congratulates its newest batch of Career Scientists.
Dr. Custer C. Deocaris, Dr. Vallerie Ann I. Samson and Dr. Jessie O. Samaniego were all conferred the rank of Career Scientist I, as announced by the Scientific Career System.
Aiming to support the career and recognition of scientists in the public service, the Scientific Career System was established through Executive Order 784 and Executive Order 901, and was further strengthened by Republic Act 8439, also known as the Magna Carta for Scientists, Engineers, Researchers and other S & T Personnel in the Government.
Entry in the Scientific Career System is both an honor and a challenge, with those selected having at least a master’s degree in the sciences, as well as significant outputs and contributions in relevant fields of applied and natural sciences.
These include major publications such as scientific articles in international journals, books and compendiums, development of inventions, discoveries, practical applications of research findings and the training of the next generation of researchers, among others.
