REGIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON OCCUPATIONAL RADIATION PROTECTION

The Philippine Government through the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will host the Regional Training course on Occupational Radiation Protection from 23-27 August 2004 at the PNRI Auditorium, Quezon City, Philippines.
The training course whose objective is to address issues associated with the basic pronciples of occupational radiation protection in the application of ionizing radiation will be conducted under the framework of the IAEA Model Project RAS/9026 Milestone 2 (Occupational Radiation Protection).
Lecturers include Dr. Celia Hacker of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO), Mr. Johann Zeger of the IAEA, Ms. Eulinia M. Valdezco, Chief , Nuclear Regulations, Licendsing and Safeguards Division of the PNRI and Mr. Nathaniel Devera, Manager, PET Center of the St. Luke's Medical Center. The Officer-in-Charge of the Radiation Protection Unit, Ms. Estrella S. Caseria is the Course Director.
PNRI DIRECTOR CHOSEN 2004 OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL

Dr. Alumanda M. del Rosa, PNRI Director, receives today the Outstanding Professional of the Year 2004 in the field of Chemistry at the Awards Night to be held at the Philippine International Convention Center.
The Award is given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) to give due recognition to professionals who render exemplary performance and outstanding achievements as a professional and for their invaluable contribution to the nation thus enhancing the prestige of their profession.
Dr. dela Rosa was cited for her outstanding contributions to the chemistry profession in the field of research and development in the applications of nuclear chemistry to environmental and biomedical problems such as the red tide, access to clean drinking water, mine tailings and marine ecosystems, for her exemplary leadership and unquestioned integrity as Director of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and as former Chairman of the Board of Chemistry, and for her remarkable efforts to strengthen the laboratory accreditation system in the country as member of the Technical Advisory Group of the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.
DESIGN BASIS THREAT WORKSHOP IN PNRI

The Philippine Government through the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) will host a Design Basis Threat (DBT) Workshop in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 27-29 April 2004 at the PNRI Auditorium.
The workshop aims to assist the Philippines in defining attributes or characteristics of potential insider and external adversaries who might attempt unauthorized removal or sabotage of nuclear and radioactive material.
Lecturers and facilitators include Mr. Guy Jones, Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA and Mr. Peter Colgan of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), Australia. The IAEA Technical Coordinator is Mr. Pierre Legoux and Workshop Coordinator is Ms. Julietta Seguis of the Safeguards Unit of the Nuclear Regulations Licensing and Safeguards Division (NRLSD) of PNRI.
The expected participants of the workshop will include national and local enforcement officers, police, state intelligence services, nuclear facility operators and other competent authorities.
PNRI in 26th Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) National Representatives Meeting (NRM)

Dr. Alumanda M. dela Rosa, PNRI Director, represented the Philippines in the 26th Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) National Representatives Meeting (NRM), held at the Holiday Inn, Islamabad, Pakistan, 12-15 April 2004. The meeting agenda included the RCA issues and challenges, main achievements in 2003, potential for partnerships with development agencies, 32nd RCA General Conference Report, RCA Annual Report for 2003, and the RCARO Initiated Programmes. (RCARO is the RCA Regional Office located in Korea.). The participants of this meeting included National RCA Representatives of the 17 Member States.
Prior to the NRM, the 5th RCARO Advisory Committee (AC) met on April 11, 2004 at the Holiday Inn in Islamabad, Pakistan. The participants included representatives of Australia, China, Philippines, Korea, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the IAEA/RCA Coordinator.
The AC meeting came up with a recommendation formally endorsing the RCARO-initiated new programmes, i.e. the Post-Doctoral Fellowship programme, the KAIST Nuclear Engineering Master's Degree Course and the KOICA Nuclear Medicine Internship Training Programme. The AC commended RCARO for increasing RCA awareness and promoting RCA partnerships in the region. The meeting elected Dr. John F. Easey, Senior Principal Researcher from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO) as the new Chair of RCARO AC.
A Scientific Forum, aimed to create awareness of the contributions that RCA programs make to address development issues in the region, was held on 13 April 2004.
