Philippines to host the 1st International Nuclear Science Olympiad
Among the myriad but prestigious international science olympiads, there’s a new kid on the block ready to break new ground in yet another challenging field of science: the International Nuclear Science Olympiad!
To spearhead this new frontier for nuclear science in the global education scene, the Philippines takes the role of hosting the 1st INSO in August 2024 at New Clark City, Pampanga.
The newly-established Olympiad will be an annual international competition for junior and senior secondary school students younger than 20 years old. Apart from the aim of increasing global awareness on the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, the INSO also particularly intends to enhance the interest of secondary school students, and to improve the teaching of nuclear concepts in educational institutions.

Carrageenan PGP bags Regional 2024 Best GIA Project at RSTW Region VIII
The Lipata Farmers and Fisherfolks Association based in Allen, Northern Samar bagged the Regional 2024 Best Grants-In-Aid Project of the DOST Regional Office No.VIII for the project "Adoption of Carrageenan Plant Growth Promoter for Rice Productivity Improvement."
Validated by the DOST-Northern Samar and the Allen Municipal Agriculture Office, the result of the LFFA members' use of the Carrageenan PGP showed a 53% increase in their rice yield. This breaks the record of previous results of 20-30% increase in rice yield.
Because of this result, the DOST - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute-developed Carrageenan PGP is highly recommended by the Allen Municipal Agriculture Office which is one of the collaborators in implementing the project.
The awarding was held on June 28, 2024 during the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week of DOST-VIII at the People's Center and Library in Tacloban City.

PNRI and MSU-IIT forge partnership to advance nuclear science and technology in Mindanao
Mindanao is now poised to go nuclear as representatives from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) came together at MSU-IIT, Iligan City on March 1, 2024 to formalize a significant collaboration aimed at promoting nuclear science and technology in Mindanao.
"Mindanao should start developing its human resources in nuclear S&T should it consider establishing nuclear power plants," stated Dr. Vallerie Samson, PNRI deputy director. She underscored the importance of preparing the region for potential advancements in nuclear energy and its applications in various sectors.
In addition to energy, nuclear science and technology have diverse applications in agriculture, food, industry, environment, water, and medicine. For instance, PNRI's research has led to the development of innovative techniques such as the use of radiation in agriculture to enhance crop yields and reduce post-harvest losses.

Bernas was joined by officials from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) as she visited several key facilities in the field of nuclear science and technology.
