The Philippine Association for Radiation Protection, (PARP) will hold its 13th Biennial Convention on 2-4 October 2009 at the Victoriano J. Rodriguez Multi-purpose Hall, Provincial Capitol, Puerto Princesa City. The theme for this year’s Convention is “Strengthening Radiation Protection Worldwide: Philippine Challenges”.

As an organization of professionals and allied workers engaged or interested in radiation protection activities, PARP aims to promote radiation safety and protection in medicine, industry, research and education which has an increasing number of users over the years.

To present and discuss the different issues in radiation protection that the country is currently facing, technical sessions will be delivered encompassing the different practices. Scientific lectures will be delivered by experts in the field from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, Bureau of Health Devices and Technology-DOH and other experts to include:

  • International Basic Safety Standards for Radiation & the WHO and IAEA Initiatives in Radiation Protection in Medicine
  • Radiation Protection Considerations in the Design and Use of Radiography Systems, Radiation Therapy Facilities, & Nuclear Medicine Units
  • Radiation Protection in Non-ionizing Radiation
  • Nuclear Power and Safety Issues
  • Radiation Protection Considerations in the Design and Use of Baggage & Cargo Inspection X-ray Systems and Industrial X-ray Units

To promote awareness of science and technology as a tool in responding to current issues on climate change, health and medicine, and the environment, the Quezon City Science Community (QCSC) joins the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the celebration of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW). 

Highlighting the celebration of the NSTW of the QCSC starting on July 21, 2009 are technology exhibits by more than 20 member-agencies, research symposia on climate change in the afternoon of July 21 and health and medicine on July 23, lecture series, open-house and demonstrations on occupational safety and radiation detection. 

The exhibition and research symposia will be held at the Techno Portal Building inside the UP Ayala Land Techno Hub along Commonwealth Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City. The open-house, lecture series and demonstrations will be held at  Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on July 22 with free planetarium showing from July 21-24; Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) on July 22 at 8:00AM to 12:00Nn; Occupational Safety and Health Center on July 23; and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on July 24.

Opening the celebration of the QCSC celebration are University of the Philippines Diliman Chancellor Dr. Sergio Cao, DOST Secretary Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro represented by DOST Undersecretary Fortunato T. dela Peña, Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. and Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Bienvenido Nebres Jr. who will give the keynote speech.

The activities slated for the closing ceremonies of the QCSC NSTW celebration on July 24, 2009 are the  Microcontroller Applications Design Contest and Physiclaban awarding by the Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development and talks on embedded systems and on mobile robots with demonstrations.

DOST Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro said that the celebration of the National Science and Technology Week affirms the government’s recognition of science and technology as a strategic tool for the country’s sustainable development and growth.  Thus, she stressed the importance of strengthening our R & D capability as well as nurturing our human resource to contribute to the pressing needs of the times.

The QCSC is an organization of multi-disciplinary institutions from government, academe, and private sectors.  The QCSC has a science and technology - based development plan, working together as partners and neighbors for a progressive and dynamic Quezon City.

Initiated by the DOST, the QCSC was originally known as the Diliman Science Community with only five DOST agencies as its members, namely Advanced Science and Technology Institute, PAGASA, PHIVOLCS, PNRI and Philippine Science High School.  The QCSC was formally established in July 22, 1993 with thirty-four member agencies.

The Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) recently took in as a member Ms. Elvira Z. Sombrito, Head of PNRI's Chemistry Research Unit, and has invited her to participate in the 36th Session of the Joint Experts Group which will be convened in Geneva, Switzerland from 27 April to 1 May 2009.

The GESAMP is an advisory body to the United Nations system on the scientific aspects of marine environmental protection, drawing experts from a wide range of relevant disciplines to help conduct and support marine environmental assessments, undertake in-depth studies and reviews of specific topics, and identify emerging issues regarding the state of the marine environment.

Ms. Sombrito, who has extensively collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency – another UN body – for marine-related radioactivity studies, and under whose stewardship the Institute gained distinction as a Collaborating Center of the IAEA, exemplifies the level of expertise gained by the country in this particular endeavor.

The GESAMP was formed in 1969, with the recognition of the fact that sound decisions in the area of marine protection and conservation depend on the availability of high-quality and reliable scientific information emanating from experts from around the world. Since then, it has reported on the “Health of the Oceans” and played a significant role in the assessment of global marine pollution and in the establishment of pertinent protocols on the subject.

With her appointment, Ms. Sombrito joins an elite group that is expected to provide guidance on questions relating to the marine environment and on particular problem areas that would require special attention from the international environmental bodies.

The Biomedical Research Laboratory of the PNRI was one of the honorees recently feted by the University of the Philippines Los Baños Bee Program for fostering research collaboration on the control of bee diseases and for efforts in harnessing the pharmaceutical potential of honey and other bee products.

The recognition, which was given on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the UPLB Bee Program was accorded by Dr. Luis Rey Velasco, UPLB Chancellor, and Dr. Enrico Supangco, UPLB Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, to Ms. Zenaida B. de Guzman, representing the Biomedical Research Unit of the Institute which she heads. A certificate attesting to the efforts of the group in promoting the growth of bee science and technology in the country was presented during the awarding rites held on 27 February.

The Biomedical Research Unit is actively involved, through a DOST Grants-in-Aid project, in studying the efficacy of gamma radiation for the sterilization of American Foul Brood-infected materials and in a separate study on the clinical applications of Philippine honey.
