IAEA/RCA Final Project Review Meeting of RAS/5/039 and Project Planning Meeting of RAS/5/043

The Philippine Government, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will host from 14 to 19 March 2005, the IAEA/RCA Final Project Review Meeting of RAS/5/039 and Project Planning Meeting of RAS/5/043.
RAS/5/039 is the regional RCA project on "Restoration of Soil Fertility and Sustenance of Agricultural Productivity", while RAS/5/043 is the regional RCA project on "Sustainable Land Use and Management Strategies for Controlling Soil Erosion and Improving Soil and Water Quality."
The back-to-back meetings intend to gather the National Project Coordinators from the RCA Member States participating in the said projects. Thirteen participants (including the Technical Officer from the International Atomic Energy Agency) will meet to review the progress of the precursor project and to formulate the workplan under the present project.
Philippine representation to this one-week affair will be made by Ms. Elvira Sombrito, the National Project Coordinator (NPC) of RAS/5/039, Ms. Adelina Bulos, who is the NPC for RAS/5/043, and Mr. Richard Balog - all from PNRI.
Philippines Nuclear Journal (PNJ) Volume 14

The Philippines Nuclear Journal (PNJ) is the official publication of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (formerly the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission). It is devoted exclusively to accounts of researches, studies and activities on nuclear energy and related fields carried out in the Philippines, or by Filipinos in investigations done outside the country.
As of date, the publication of PNJ is now in its 14th volume. The quality of the Journal is maintained through strict reviews of technical papers submitted for publication by the Board of Editors and Panels of External Editors.
It is envisioned that through PNJ, scientists could harness the potentials of resolving the socio-economic challenges in the country and maximize the resources available in meeting these challenges.
The 2004 issue of PNJ includes five technical papers, five short communications and a commemorative essay. The commemorative essay on the experimental detonation of a nuclear device in 1958 in circumterrestrial space is dedicated in honor of the first death anniversary of Ilya Progogine, the 1977 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry,. The technical papers focus on different applications of nuclear S&T in agriculture, environment and physical science while the various short communications are initial studies that form the core of comprehensive investigative works in the future.
The PNJ is distributed to various school libraries and other government agencies. Its publication is funded by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.
RCA Meeting on Modification of Natural Polymers through Radiation Processing

The Philippine government through the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) will host the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) Meeting on Modification of Natural Polymers through Radiation Processing on 13-17 December 2004 at the PNRI Compound, Quezon City. The meeting aims to disseminate information and knowledge on radiation processing of natural polymers; to demonstrate the application of irradiated products for agriculture, healthcare and environment protection; and to disseminate knowledge enabling participants to plan application of the technology based on raw materials utilization.
The meeting is expected to provide knowledge on radiation technologies applications, including their advantages over the conventional technologies; training on the safe use of radiation for materials processing; and an increased capacity to utilize the acquired knowledge and skills in the planning and implementation of these processes at a national level.
The meeting, which will be attended by thirteen participants from twelve countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The PNRI Director, Dr. Alumanda M. Dela Rosa is the Philippine National Project Coordinator.
More Expert Missions to PNRI

Dec. 6-11, 2004: Dr. Cherif Hadj Slimane, Director, Office Programme Development and Performance Assessment of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); Dr. Reyad Kamel, Acting Section Head, Asia and Pacific Section of the IAEA; Dr. Peter Roberts, IAEA Expert on sustainability of Research Institutions and Ms. Florence Boisson, IAEA Technical Officer of the Harmful Algal Blooms project, are visiting the Philippines to review and assess the research and development institutions (RDIs) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), particularly in relation to nuclear technology. A seminar on the Technical Cooperation (TC) Programme of the IAEA was conducted at DOST, and a meeting with the heads of DOST's RDIs was also held early in the week for this purpose. The mission also covered a programme review of ongoing IAEA TC Projects, update of the Country Programme Framework and discussions on the IAEA 2005-2006 TC Programme in the Philippines.
Dec. 10, 2004: Dr. Jong Hyun Kim and Associate Professor Gyuseong Cho of the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering (NQe) of the Korea Advance Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Dr. Dae Ki Kim of the Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) Regional Office will visit the Philippines on December 10, 2004. The mission will give a tlak/orientation at the PNRI for engineering graduates and/or graduating students from the University of the Philippines, aiming to encourage the students to pursue a Master's degree program in Nuclear Engineering at the KAIST. The graduate program is being supported by KAIST and the Korean government, under a cooperative project of the International Atomic Energy Agency/Regional Cooperative Agreement (IAEA/RCA). A similar forum will be held at the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) in Manila with students from the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) and De La Salle University (DLSU) participating.
Dec. 13-17, 2004: Mr. Kun Mo Choi, Director of the Regional Cooperative Agreement Regional Office (RCARO) and Mr. John Chung, Programme Officer of the RCARO will visit the Philippines in connection with the RCA Regional Meeting on Modification of Natural Polymers through Radiation Processing. Mr. Choi and Mr. Chung will present the projects and other activities being undertaken by the RCARO. The RCARO is mandated to increase RCA awareness to its stakeholders, including the public, and to promote additional partnerships for RCA projects for better RCA visibility and viability in the region.
