Year 2 - Project STRIVE with DOST-PNRI and DepEd-QC
The Department of Education – Schools Division Office, Quezon City once again partnered with DOST-PNRI as it launched Year 2 of Division Project STRIVE (Science, Technology, Research in Innovative Venture) involving the selected elementary and secondary students in Quezon City at the Quezon City Science Interactive Center.
The students selected to participate in the activity are the best in science in their respective schools or winners in national, regional and international science contests.
Project STRIVE consists of twenty (20) Saturdays, and includes Nuclear Science Education, facilitated by experts from PNRI, as one of the major topics for the seminar-workshop, along with the fields of Science Investigatory Project (SIP), Science Improvisation, and Robotics.
Around 120 students were taught the basics of atomic structure and radioactivity, radiation protection, environmental radiation monitoring, nuclear and radiation applications in agriculture, chemistry, biomedical research, analytical techniques, and nuclear emergency preparedness and response.
During the 46th Atomic Energy Week Celebration last December 2018, Quezon City Councilor Precious Hipolito-Castelo acknowledged the role of Project STRIVE in the city's efforts to become a leading science and technology hub in the country.
PSHS Partners with PNRI in Nuclear Education

PSHS System Executive Director Dr. Lilia Habacon with PNRI Director Dr. Carlo Arcilla signing the Memorandum of Understanding between PSHS and PNRI on November 23, 2018 at the PSHS Main Campus in Quezon City. The MOU provides for cooperation in scientific research, mentoring and internship programs, and organization of workshops and training courses, among others.
PSHS Partners with PNRI in Nuclear Education
Pushing the frontier of nuclear education by getting the country’s best and brightest students on board, the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System joins the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) in a nationwide project in bringing nuclear and radiation science to secondary school classrooms.
With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in November last year, PNRI and PSHS will engage in mentoring and internship programs between the high school students and the Institute’s very own scientists and researchers, culminating in joint scientific research programs.
The MOU provides for a five-year cooperative partnership between PNRI and PSHS, commencing in 2019. The two agencies are also looking forward to organize workshops, trainings, symposia, and other academic and cultural activities, particularly this 2019.
PSHS has previously participated in the Nuclear Science and Technology Education Program (nSTEp+) rolled out by PNRI. The NSTEP is an inter-agency partnership between PNRI, PSHS, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Science Education Institute (SEI) which aims to expand its reach to all the regions in the Philippines, inspiring the Filipino youth through nuclear science and technology.
The program draws rich experience from technical cooperation projects by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) initiated in 2015, as well as its current project on Educating Secondary Students and Science Teachers on Nuclear Science and Technology, which covers the entire Asia-Pacific region.
PNRI has also signed an MOU with DepEd in the implementation of the IAEA project last February 2018 during the Regional Workshop on Curriculum Development and Launching of Nuclear Science and Technology for Secondary Schools.
During the workshop, in which representatives of 23 IAEA Member States were present, PSHS officials participated along with PNRI and DepEd in the landmark effort to expand the teaching of nuclear science in the Philippines as well as in other countries.
DOST-PNRI Bags 19 International Publication Awards

DOST-PNRI Bags 19 International Publication Awards
Scientists and researchers from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) once again garnered several awards for publications in internationally-recognized journals during this year’s DOST Intellectual Property Awards (IPA).
The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the Philippines’ leading advisory and scientific recognition body, awarded 19 publications with the DOST International Publication Award – one of the awards given during the 2018 DOST IPA ceremonies held on December 18 at the Philippine International Convention Center – the highest number of international publications among DOST agencies this year.
The publications were authored by 23 PNRI scientists and researchers. In addition, two Utility Model Registration Awards were also received by PNRI researchers.
The DOST International Publication Award is given annually to DOST scientists and researchers who were able to publish their research outputs in Thomson Reuters (formerly ISI) or Scopus indexed journals in the last three years before the year of the nomination. The DOST Granted Patent and Utility Model Registration Awards are given in recognition of the efforts of DOST technology developers whose technologies have been granted patent or utility model registration in the last three (3) years preceding the award.

PNRI Celebrates the 46th Atomic Energy Week
Bringing nuclear and radiation applications closer to the Filipino people, the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) celebrated the 46th Atomic Energy Week (AEW) from December 10-14, 2018 at the PNRI compound with the theme, “Nuclear Science and Technology for the People: Innovation for Collective Prosperity".
The annual AEW celebration, as mandated under Presidential proclamation No. 1211 in 1973, aims to generate awareness of the Filipino people on the beneficial uses of nuclear science and technology.
The opening ceremonies on December 10 was graced by DOST Secretary Fortunato De la Peña, DOST Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevarra, Quezon City Councilor Precious Hipolito-Castelo, who represented Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte-Alimurung, and Atty. Teresa Ira Maris P. Guanzon, who delivered the keynote message of Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Energy.
The Institute opened its 1st Nuclear Research and Development Conference on the afternoon of December 10 and on December 11, with in-depth presentations by PNRI scientists and researchers on various nuclear and radiation applications in agriculture, food, health and medicine, industry, and the environment.
PNRI also showcased several open-house technical exhibits with free guided tours for all visitors on December 12 to 13 and on the morning of December 14. The exhibits featured the latest nuclear and radiation technologies, products and services by PNRI.
As a pre-event, senior high school students, college students and young professionals attended the Fourth Philippine Nuclear Youth Summit to be held on December 4, organized by the Philippine Young Generation in Nuclear (PYGN), an organization of young Filipinos that promotes the practice of nuclear science and technology in the Philippines. Officials and representatives from the International Youth Nuclear Congress also graced the summit.
Meanwhile, 34 teams of high school students from across the country competed in the national level of the 2018 Philippine Nuclear Science Quiz (PNSQ) on December 13.
The students from Philippine Science High School-Central Visayas Campus got the first place, followed by Davao City National High School for second place and Philippine Science High School – Cordillera Administrative Region Campus for third place. Tied at fourth place are the students from Negros Occidental High School and Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus.
