As part of the 41st Atomic Energy Week celebration, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute-Department of Science and Technology (PNRI-DOST) invites students from public and private secondary schools across the country to join the 2013 Philippine Nuclear Science Quiz.
The competition will cover various topics regarding nuclear science and technology such as radiation and radioactivity, atomic/nuclear structure, radiation protection, nuclear regulations and other related topics.
Two students will form a team to represent their respective schools at the eliminations to be held on November 26 at the PNRI compound in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.
The first round consists of a 50-item multiple choice examination; the top 25 teams during the hour-long eliminations will advance into the semi-finals on December 12, during the Atomic Energy Week held at PNRI.
The semi-finals will also consist of a written examination, with the same time limit but with 40 multiple choice questions more difficult than the previous round. The five teams who will top the second round will advance into the quiz show portion for the finals to be held on the same day.
Cash prizes will be awarded at the end of the Atomic Energy Week to the first, second and third placers in the final round – P30,000, P20,000 and P10,000 respectively – as well as medals, trophies and plaques of recognition.
Slots are only limited to the first 50 registrants. Official endorsement by the principal or the division superintendent of the Department of Education is required.
As mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 1211 in 1973, the annual AEW is celebrated every second week of December to help generate public awareness of the beneficial uses of nuclear science and technology.
The Atomic Energy Week will be celebrated at PNRI from December 9 to 13, with open-house exhibits and guided tours to PNRI facilities. This year’s celebration will focus on enhancing public awareness on breakthroughs in nuclear science and technology, as well as safety and security in undertaking activities involving radioactive materials.
