PNRI experts at Nuclear Science CAMP 2025
Experts from the DOST-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) showcased the various applications of nuclear science and technology to the participants of the Nuclear Science CAMP (Capacitating and Mentoring Program) from April 29 to 30, 2025
Spearheaded by the Science Teacher Academy for the Regions (STAR) of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), the two-day camp was hosted by the Philippine Normal University (PNU) with various pre-service and faculty members from all its campuses as participants.
Among the key speakers are PNRI Chemistry Research Section Head Dr. Jordan Madrid, who introduced the 'campers' to the wide variety of fields in which nuclear science can prove useful, such as agriculture, industry, medicine, and materials testing.
Following his lecture is PNRI Nuclear Analytical Techniques Application Section Head Mr. Raymond Sucgang, who facilitated a hands-on workshop wherein the participants were able to use survey meters in identifying the radiation levels of various samples.
From the Nuclear Reactor Operations Section, Mr. Rolando Menor Jr. talked about the role of nuclear power in addressing the country's energy needs and fostering national development.
As an offshoot of last year's similar event, the Nuclear Science CAMP aims to introduce basic concepts on nuclear science, showcase its contribution to the public and revisit the curriculum to find ways to improve the delivery of nuclear science to the learners through the conduct of various lectures, workshops, and an immersive experience through visits and tours creating a network of science teachers across the regions, providing a platform for collaboration and fostering opportunities in nuclear science and technology.
