DOST-PNRI spearheads nuke tech for food and health at NSTW 2024

The wonders of atomic innovation are once again felt down South, as scientists from researchers from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) feature its latest nuclear and radiation applications at the 2024 National Science, Technology and Innovation Week (NSTW) at the Limketkai Center in Cagayan De Oro City!

These technologies include food irradiation to decontaminate and extend the shelf life of food products, sterilized superfoods from hitherto less-explored sources of nutrients, sterile insect technique to reduce the population of dengue mosquitoes, and isotope-based techniques over conventional methods in authenticating condiments and food – particularly to ensure adherence of foodstuffs to the dietary requirements for halal and the prohibitions classified as haram, respectively.

To make these technologies relatable and literally 𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘬𝘮𝘶𝘳𝘢, PNRI's very own experts also hosted a forum titled 'What's Your Ulam, Bestie?" on November 28 at the Luxe Hotel.

The Depatment of Science and Technology hosted this year's NSTW from November 27 to December 01 with the theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan” and with the sub-theme “Providing Solutions and Opening Opportunities in the Green Economy”.
