2024 National Training Course on Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring
The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), in collaboration with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), hosted the 2024 National Training Course on Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring at the PNRI compound in Quezon City.
This annual workshop, organized by PNRI's Health Physics Research Section (HPRS), aims to equip participants with a foundational understanding of radiation and environmental radioactivity monitoring. Attendees included university instructors, government researchers, and radiation safety specialists from across the Philippines.
Expert lecturers included Dr. Hiroki Fujita and Dr. Kazuya Yoshimura (JAEA), as well as Dr. Kazuki Iwaoka (QST), alongside specialists from PNRI's Health Physics Research Section and its Nuclear Analytical Techniques and Risk Impact Assessment Sections.
The curriculum featured standard lectures, practical exercises on radioactivity measurement, environmental sample handling, and data analysis. This year’s course also addressed the release of ALPS-treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
The top three participants based on their exam scores for this year were as follows:
• 1st Place - Gwen B. Castillon (De La Salle University - Manila)
• 2nd Place - Mary Grace M. Lanwang (Bataan Peninsula State University)
• 3rd Place - Darryl Mathew F. Tongson (Philippine Nuclear Research Institute)
