PNRI and MSU-IIT forge partnership to advance nuclear science and technology in Mindanao
Mindanao is now poised to go nuclear as representatives from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) came together at MSU-IIT, Iligan City on March 1, 2024 to formalize a significant collaboration aimed at promoting nuclear science and technology in Mindanao.
"Mindanao should start developing its human resources in nuclear S&T should it consider establishing nuclear power plants," stated Dr. Vallerie Samson, PNRI deputy director. She underscored the importance of preparing the region for potential advancements in nuclear energy and its applications in various sectors.
In addition to energy, nuclear science and technology have diverse applications in agriculture, food, industry, environment, water, and medicine. For instance, PNRI's research has led to the development of innovative techniques such as the use of radiation in agriculture to enhance crop yields and reduce post-harvest losses.
Dr. Ephrime Metillo, Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at MSU-IIT, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the transformative potential of the partnership. "This collaboration between PNRI and MSU-IIT marks a significant milestone in our efforts to advance scientific knowledge and innovation in Mindanao," he remarked.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed by Dr. Carlo Arcilla (PNRI Director), Dr. Samson, Prof. Alizedney Ditucalan (MSU-IIT Chancellor), and Dr. Metillo outlines joint initiatives, including research and knowledge exchange, aimed at fostering scientific and technological advancements in the region. It envisions joint training programs, specialized courses, and capacity-building activities through lectures, seminars, and workshops.
Furthermore, it facilitates the exchange of scientists and experts, allowing the use of each party's research facilities and the transfer of cutting-edge technologies. MSU-IIT, with its robust research capabilities and talented faculty and students, serves as an invaluable partner in this endeavor, particularly in Mindanao.
"This partnership signifies a significant step towards shaping the future of nuclear science and technology in Mindanao," remarked Dr. Samson. "Through collaboration with educational institutions like MSU-IIT, PNRI is committed to building a skilled workforce capable of driving progress in nuclear energy and its various applications," she added.
The partnership between PNRI and MSU-IIT holds immense promise for advancing scientific knowledge and innovation in Mindanao, with both institutions poised to play pivotal roles in shaping the region's future in nuclear science and technology.
