Dr. Jesse O. Samaniego is a Senior Science Research Specialist at the DOST - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.
Dr. Samaniego had implemented research projects in understanding the science of heavy metal contaminations insn abandoned mercury mine site and small-scale gold mining areas and its human implications. He has developed a method on rapid assessment of environmental conditions of abandoned and inactive mine sites as guidance to its rehabilitation prioritization.
The outputs of his recent project in an abandoned mercury mine are now being used as guide for the rehabilitation and in ecological and health risk assessment. He also designed and developed a field-scale wastewater treatment system, with cocopeat as adsorbent, for heavy metal-laden effluents from small-scale gold mining processing plants.
