DOST-PNRI ends HANDA Pilipinas with nuclear tech at Visayas Leg
Capping the year with scientific solutions in facing natural hazards, researchers from the DOST - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute showcased vital nuclear and radiation technology for the HANDA Pilipinas Visayas Leg held from October 27 to 29, 2025 at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
Among the technologies featured by PNRI are the country's current developments towards a national radiological emergency preparedness and response, including radiation monitoring stations, development of radiation-processed hemostats for stopping bleeding for medical and emergency applications, and the use of isotope hydrology studies in assessing groundwater and soil contamination after flooding during typhoons or storm surges.
With the theme, “Padayon Visayas: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Resilient, Unified and Sustainable Visayas” for its last leg, HANDA Pilipinas aims to continue the push towards the increasing role of S&T in turning innovation into solutions tailored for local communities ready to face natural hazards and the challenges of economic development.
"Disaster risk reduction begins with accurate, timely and localized data. Without a clear understanding of the risks unique to each community, planning and preparation become reactive instead of proactive," said DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.
"Risks are local; therefore, resilience actions must be localized."
