PNRI researcher gets best student poster award in Poland environmental radioactivity conference
Fern Rose A. Peregrino, project technical assistant of the DOST-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute’s Nuclear Materials Research Section, recently won the Best Student Poster Award at the 8th International Conference on Environmental Radioactivity (ENVIRA 2025) held September 14-19, 2025 in Kraków, Poland.
Peregrino’s study “Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling and Radiological Environmental Impact Assessment for the Potential Reopening of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Philippines” was recognized for its scientific rigor, clarity, and national relevance.
An MS in Environmental Engineering student at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Peregrino was the only master’s student to earn the award, as other competitors were PhD students from top universities in Europe and East Asia.
The biennial ENVIRA is one of the premier international gatherings in the field of environmental radioactivity.
The 2025 conference, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in cooperation with Comenius University in Bratislava, was with the theme “Radionuclides in Climate Change Studies.” The week-long conference featured over 120 oral presentations and nearly 150 poster presentations from over 30 countries worldwide. Poland, Japan, China, and other European Union member states were considered as strongest participations while significant representation were from the United States and Canada.
Peregrino’s achievement not only brings honor to PNRI but also places the Philippines firmly on the map in the highly competitive, global scientific arena of environmental radioactivity. Her recognition underscores the country’s growing contributions to nuclear science and environmental research, demonstrating that Filipino scientists and young researchers can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their peers from the world’s leading institutions.
PNRI celebrates this achievement as a milestone not only for Ms. Peregrino but also for the Philippines’ expanding role in international collaborations on nuclear science, environmental safety, and climate change research.
